Ian Colyer

Write-up by Barbara Fernandez

We had a fun night at The Star of Kings with our fab MC Martina O’Sullivan! First up was Aarian Mehrabani who, as he can’t see faces very well, very much appreciates vocal responses to his material – especially during sex. We then had Ian Colyer (pictured), who is pestered by pesky poltergeists who clearly have unfinished business in his house – turning on all the taps. Next was Stanislav Gunko. Thanks to Vinted, Stan is the proud owner of a generic Eastern European accent to mask his Russian origins. Tony Carr then says his kids are so generous – they’ve bought him so many vouchers for Pure Cremations, he can now bring a plus one. We then had Cameron Holder who ditched his South African accent as soon as he came to London, much like his friends from Birmingham. Scarlett Thomas provided excellent advice for anyone who believes they have a book in them – see a doctor – before Evan Henley impressed the crowd with so many spontaneous audience questions – they were even written down. Next up was sex ed teacher Su Gee, who says the most difficult part of teaching so much racy vocabulary was making sure you wiped it off the board quickly afterwards. Closing the first half was the glitzy fabulousness that is Amber Phillips, whose home of Southend may have the longest pleasure pier, but despite its length, no one seems to get any pleasure from it. Maybe because Southend, according to Netflix, doubles perfectly as war-torn Kosovo.
Our second half opened with Rich Bunn. Rich is plagued with the voice of one who owns land, but the bank account of someone who’s just decided to quit their job to pursue standup comedy. Jonathan Laury then told us about the hidden value of board games – you can bore yourself silly with doing more reading to understand the rules than you needed to leave school. Next up was Colman Moloney, who loves the Irish funerals of his homeland – except when the corpse gets in the way of the sandwiches. Rebecca Minty then angered her face yoga teacher with her ‘angry 11s’ before Owen Stanley shared the best performance of Eurovision – the sign language interpreter. It was then over to Nina Shcheglova who, when faced with the question at immigration ‘How are you?’ responded with ‘can’t complain’…and then proceeded to do just that. Next up was Ajay who was raised with both Catholicism and reincarnation – so he’s got guilt locked and loaded already for his next life. Tom Raphael was sad to hear his nan suffered a heart attack while on her stairlift – her pulse was slowing but she was still ascending. Our closing headliner was the wonderful Arthur Mitchell. Arthur was thrilled when an attractive woman caught his eye – and then offered him a place to sit. His wife has also given him a few surprises – she was furious spending money on a locksmith – if she’d only let him in the house.
So that was our night at The Star of Kings. There’s no gig at the Star on Monday 25th as it’s a bank holiday, but you can come along on Sunday 24th with the fabulously funny Martina O’Sullivan and the utterly hilarious Andy Brittain.
