It was a fun afternoon of comedy at The Star of Kings on Sunday. First to make them laugh was the marvellously musical Barbara Fernandez doing it zombie style for the right kind of stiff. It was then over to Lucy Clark who has discovered her idea a real Hell is being trapped in a room with a 7 year old who’s just discovered how to cartwheel. After Lucy was Marc Cohen whose recent vasectomy turned out to be a bit like shutting the stable door after the midwife has bolted. It was then over to Tim O’Hare who has been described as nonchalant. As he’s not sure what chant is, he’s uncertain if it’s a compliment or insult. Auz Thompson (pictured) then laid out his stall as being single and ready to flamingo before Atle wondered if he can really tell his kids booze and sex are a bad mix, especially in view of the fact that’s how they came about. We then had Grace Gooda who came all the way from Clapham, via Brisbane, and if going on a date with Grace, make sure you have god running shoes. Hot on Grace’s heels was Dean Helliwell and what it feels like to be banged by a grumpy silverback. Closing the first half was G&B’s poet laureate, the brilliant Jack Scullion, a man who seriously can’t take a compliment.
After the break, and my all time favourite bit of card magic, we got off to a cracking start thanks to Declan Evans who gave us news from Essex plus a few easy tips on how to look harder. After Declan was Will Haslam, a posh lad hoping his life’s story arch will be a rich to richer tale. Next was Joe Greenslade, a man who’s made being single and unable to mingle and art form. It was then over to NJ who in the right light can come across as an uptight white woman. It was then the turn of John Barrie who is mourning the loss of his Glaswegian grandma…who died 30 years ago. After John was Brandon Charleston and the fixed wheel twittery dichotomy before Neil Davies, aka Private Mavis, pondered whether flowers, chocolates or a defibrillator was the right thing to take on a first date. Closing the show was Mr Corporate, the hilarious Phillip Cornwall. Phil took the crowd through bonkers buzz word addiction and contemptuous corporate crappery to unleash our inner thought rhinos.
So that was a fun afternoon of comedy. Monday at The Star of Kings is another of G&B’s Dark Delights, our evening of dark comedy. And next Sunday we have Tony Carr and Mj Hunter headlining. So hopefully see you then.
