G&B Sunday afternoons at The Star of Kings

Sarah Rowan
It was great afternoon at The Star of Kings on Sunday. First up was the one-liner punch-a-thon that is Ollie Taylor and the right to bear arms. It was then over to Max Gill how was bullied at school for being gay and ginger. Only one of those turned out to be accurate. Next was Tony Carr and how to cure a dog of biting and make new friends. After Tony was the brilliantly bizarre James Sutton and the old rule about chopping worms in half that really doesn’t work with cats. Nicky Vere-Compton was hot on Tony’s heels with plasma drives, victorian comic opera and matricide. After Nicky was Jack Spoole and how to get the toxicity from a room before Zak Baker got us wondering about recreational screaming. It was then over to Steven Mayne and the semen taste test before Stefania Licari told us she might not be the most reliable in case of emergencies…if she’s performing, that is. Barbara Fernandez then closed the first half with some musical numbers and the confusion issue of the Zoom face.
After the break, and a quick bit of mind reading, we got off to a great start thanks to Matt Withers and everything from snowflake dogs to click bait and the return of Ramsey Street. Ron Shah was next with why cyclists can’t tell the difference between distance and time. Our next act, Sarah Rowan (pictured), was performing her first ever set and I think it’s fair to say the crowd thought she absolutely smashed it. A simply awesome first set that had us wondering if Fenella is just a posh name or an STI. Declan Evans then told us why he doesn’t like bringing family members to gigs, especially if your nan’s as foul mouther as his. Our next act was Ryan Connor. Every now and then an act stands out because they bring to the stage something slightly leftfield, either in delivery, material, a look, attitude etc. Ryan does just that. He creates a strange tension that becomes utterly hypnotic. Just don’t get him started on Amazon drones! The afternoon’s penultimate act was Calvin Smith, a medically sweaty man who’s related to an overachieving professor. Closing the show was G&B’s spiritual guide, the one and only Yogie Belle (aka Michael Yanny). Master Belle took the crowd through various stages of enlightenment and spiritual development, guiding us through the imaginary home of the mind and its immaculately maintained conservatory. Fabulous stuff.
So that was Sunday at The Star of Kings. Next Sunday is Girlpower at The Star of Kings. Headlining we have the hilarious Georgia Thorp and the fabulous Pam Ford. Your MC for the afternoon is our very own Barbara Fernandez.
