Monday night at The Star of Kings was our G&B’s Nightmare Before Christmas Show, our evening dedicated to comedy’s darker side. First to the stage was Steven Mayne, a man who adores the miracle of science…until it needs nappy changing. It was then over to Ben Marciano and why dog puke and mirrors are the enemy of a good trip. Next was Jeroen Bloemhoff and a spectacular rendition of arguably the most famous gag in comedy history, The Aristocrats. After Jeroen was Fred Bell, a man who knows his limits of alpha male machismo, and can iron a great crease in chinos. Stephen Portlock was next with a tale of unusual cinematic romance with The Aristocrats. Barbara Fernandez then gave us the Christmas fuck-up song before Becky Jade told of her inherited armoury. It was then over to Donatas Staneika who loves his motherland so much he’d do anything to not go back. Closing the first half was Andrew Dipple and the greatest ever rule of thumb plus why you should never burn incest sticks at home.
After the break, and a little seance in which we found out just where Molly Winston got her hair done, we got off to a great start thanks to Kim Hope and the irony of why jumping under trains is a sure fire way to have people want to push you under them. Martin Bowman then gave us a spectacular, almost Dickensian Christmas tale of just why headless ghosts are the afterlife’s slackers. Prakash Mistry then had us asking if he is indeed Mr Coffee Bean before Dillon Harris had us big up the agnostics, the metaphysical cowards you always hedge their bets. Jack Henison then made it clear he doesn’t identify as an alpha male, which is in many ways just as well. The evening’s penultimate act was the brilliant Damian Krushner. Damian reckons a burial plot is about his only real chance of buying affordable property. Closing the show was the fabulously reprehensible Elliot Curtis (pictured). When it comes to dark comedy, there’s no one quite like Elliot to leave a room slack jawed, self-loathing and sore with laughter.
So that was our Nightmare Before Christmas show. Our next show Monday night at The Star of Kings isn’t until January 8th when we’ll be kicking things off with the first New Act Competition of 2024 where December’s winner, Mj Hunter, will return to do his paid guest spot.
