This Thursday night at The Royal George (soho) was probably my favourite night there this year. We had a lovely crowd who were an absolute joy and a line-up that was a dream to MC, which was just as well as my voice barely made it to the end of the night. First to the stage was Calvin Smith a man so used to having a crap bed his body has rebelled against him after getting a decent quality mattress. Barbara Fernandez was next with the musical confession that it’s been 7 years and 15 days since she had a…well, if you want to know go see her perform. Next was Ben Marciano and the perfect recipe for the less than perfect trip. After Ben was Jack Henison, the potential founder of Hip, a band whose tribute act will one day be called Hip Replacement. Luke McCarthy then explained just why he never knows how to properly address a bus driver. Phillip Reiss the took us from smart phones to less than smart people before Lucy Clark gave us some pro, inside knowledge of football and rugby: the ball goes forward in one and backwards in the other. Indi Madray was next with just why she feels she’s let her family down, despite that call centre job she did for two days. After Indi was Declan Evans, a man who now looks way harder thanks to his lost dog. Closing the first half was the Jack Scullion immersive poetry experience. And what an experience it was! Alongside Jack were his prose co-stars Calvin Smith and Luke McCarthy and Tiger as the inner voice of self-doubt.
After the break we got off to a great start thanks to the hilarious Phil Green and the true signs of a breakdown: the desire to compete in an Iron Man. Next, completing his comedy world tour was the smartest dressed man in comedy, the sartorially stupendous Sobin ST. After Sobin was Oliver Wright. Now Oliver isn’t at all superstitious. In fact, he’ll happily break a mirror, especially the ones that deserve it. After Oliver was Helena Moody and a game of truth and lies that had waaaaay more nipple than expected. Mj Hunter (pictured) then told us just why he should never be the guy we send back in a time travel experiment. After MJ, Steve Elswood took us back to the day that during a fitness test he was told he was above average. Sadly, at the time, he was being weighed. The evening’s penultimate act was Tiger. Now, ladies, he may not be hung, but he’s funny, owns property and comes from money. So catch him while you can. Closing the show was Mr Corporate himself, Phillip Cornwall, comedy’s funniest thought rhino and the man with his pulse on tomorrow’s business buzz words.
So that was an awesome night of comedy. Well done everyone who performed Thursday. You were all amazing. Headlining next Thursday we have Tony Carr and Alan Jay Byrne.
