Jonny Brace
It was a great night at Royal George Charing Cross Road on Thursday with a cracking atmosphere. Opening the show was Mac O’Donnell with some great advice on how not to buy your balloons. It was then over to Richard Wheatley and the design deficiencies of disabled loos. Next was Lauren Rivers and the joys of Woburn’s subtropical paradise…and the symptoms of typhoid. After Lauren was Raj Kukadia and his annoyance with our lack of white Christmases. Cameron Holder then started telling us about a subtropical paradise, but it wasn’t Woburn; he’s from Durban. After Cameron was Kat Hennesy, who explained why Keir Starmer is a bag of dicks before Marios Hajipanayi assured the room that he wasn’t cheating on anyone’s wife or partner…unless they have a Santa fetish. It was then over to Marcos Brito and tales of families, speedos and rap. Speaking of families, closing the first half was Steven Mayne with some great family wisdom. Such as, the difference between a sharp and blunt knife is how much the victim screams.
After the break, and a little magic with a borrowed finger ring from the crowd, we got off to a great start thanks to Phil Green, a man with a rather impressive scout ting achievement. Now Thursday night saw us with three acts doing their first ever gigs and I think it was fair to say every single one of them delivered great sets. The first such new face was the hilarious Tom Frank, who had all the dog owners in the room wondering if we’d been conned into believing a certain messy and expensive treatment was actually necessary (and for those there last night, I did tell my flatmate I got this from a vet!). Amber Phillips then told of the benefits of being a working girl who may or may not lick lampposts. After amber was Charlie Firth, a man with an impressive right bicep. Just don’t ask how. Carlos Donovan then gave us a graphic image of Soho’s late night, street food cuisine before Sam Edwards told us how to go from cool guest to uninvited heckler at a wedding. The evening’s penultimate act was Luke Ditchfield, who told us just why it’s best to knock back an edible before starting a new job…if working with kids! Closing the show was the fabulously funny Jonny Brace. From a great cat serenade to a glorious ode to Jesus, Jonny had the singing along and most likely going to Hell.
So that was Thursday night at The Royal George and it was a really fun evening. Headlining next Thursday we have the one and only, fabulous and outrageous, Pam Ford.
